Appleton Ridge – Camden Hills Fall Foliage Tour – Sunday, October 17, 2010
On Sunday, October 17th, Peter & Shelly Hanson will lead a casual, low-key, low-speed, ambling driving tour over some scenic back country roads that will take us up across Appleton Ridge and eventually to Mount Battie in Camden. We will begin by meeting in Augusta at 9:30 AM in the lower parking lot at the Augusta Civic Center, directly across the street from the entrance to the Ground Round. This in-town location is convenient to I-95 & Route 27 from all directions as well as US 202 from the west. We will follow Route 105 east through Windsor, Somerville to Washington, and then down to Union where we will stop at the convenience store at the westerly junction of Routes 17 & 131 around 10:30 AM to meet the folks coming up from the coast. After a brief respite and opportunity to gas up or buy lunch, we’ll head north up Route 131 following along scenic Sennebec Pond to Appleton Ridge where we will be able to enjoy some great views and vistas from high up on the ridge. From there, we expect to continue by skirting around the edge of Searsmont and the west side of Lincolnville ending up on top of Mount Battie at Camden Hills.
Be sure to pack your coolers and picnic lunches and bring your blankets or folding chairs because there will be ample opportunities to stop along the way to have a picnic and enjoy some fantastic scenery. We think you’ll enjoy the views from Appleton Ridge and atop Mount Battie, as well as a nice back country ride at a leisurely pace. See you in October!
